Mariana Bonnouvrier

I joined the Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies (PoLIS) as a Lecturer in French in January 2021. My teaching covers all years of the undergraduate French modules for programmes in Modern Languages, International Politics and Modern Languages, International Management and Modern Languages.

As of September 2025, I am taking on the newly-created role of Deputy Director of Teaching with a focus on Student Experience at PoLIS. In this role, I will be leading initiatives to support student wellbeing, engagement and experience. I have a particular interest in student wellbeing and am currently working on a project revolving around the Year Abroad, supported by a Teaching Development Fund (awarded in July 2024).

Between 2022-2025, I was Director of Studies for the BA (Hons) in Modern Languages and European Studies (years 3 & 4). In this role, I was nominated for a ‘Teaching Excellence’ Award and awarded a ‘Recognising Excellence’ Award in 2024. Since 2022, I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Before joining the University of Bath, I lectured French at the Universities of Bristol (2019-2021) and Oxford (St Anne's College, 2017-2021, Lady Margaret Hall 2018-2019, Department for Continuing Education 2015-2021). Prior to these, I had qualified as a language teacher in 2013 and taught English in France at the Éducation Nationale (secondary schools) and at the Université Côte d'Azur where I was an ATER (2012-2015).

In 2020, I completed my PhD in Modern Languages/English Studies, specialising in History of Ideas, at the University of Nice. My research examined the evolution of the English republican tradition in the nineteenth century and the reception of republican ideas under Queen Victoria.
