Research interests
My research focuses on social, epistemic and environmental justice in and through education in low income countries. I explore the disjuncture between policies and practice and the impact this has on inequalities in learning experiences and outcomes. I have a particular interest in the injustices related to languages of learning and teaching (such as English Medium Education).
I use mixed-methods approaches that encompass participatory and creative methods to enable greater understanding of the impact of policies for teachers, learners and parents in school and community settings. I also have a strong interest in cross-cultural research, particularly regarding researcher positioning and ethics.
I'm currently working on a collaborative British Council funded project exploring notions of repair in English secondary school classrooms in Nepal and Uganda. Other recent collaborative and international projects have explored:
- The relationship between environmental, epistemic and transitional justice in secondary schooling in Peru, Nepal and Uganda (funded by a GCRF ESRC research grant);
- Girls' educational experiences and outcomes in English Medium Rwandan basic education (funded by an ESRC new investigator award).
My research is situated within the field of international and comparative education. I have been deputy chair of UKFIET, an editorial board member of the journal Compare and a member of the executive committee for the British Association for International and Comparative Education (BAICE).
Willing to supervise doctoral students
I am interested in supervising new PhD students researching topics broadly related to basic education in low income countries and specifically related to:
- English Medium Education
- Environmental justice
- Epistemic Justice
- Social Justice
Other responsibilities
I am the Co-lead of the Research group 'Reimagining Education for Better Futures'.
