Research interests

Dr Leire Barrera‑Medrano is a Lecturer in Spanish at the University of Bath, where she joined the Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies in February 2019. She lectures across Spanish language, business communication, and contemporary politics and culture in the Spanish-speaking world, with a particular focus on minoritised languages and environmental discourse.

Before joining Bath, she held associate lecturing positions at Goldsmiths (University of London), Birkbeck College (University of London), and the University of Sheffield, where she designed and delivered modules in Spanish, Comparative Literature, and English. She holds a PhD in Contemporary Literature from Birkbeck (University of London) (2018), an MA in the History of the Book from the School of Advanced Study (University of London) (2012), an MA in Publishing from the University of Salamanca (2011), a BA in Journalism and Communication from Universidad Nebrija, Madrid (2005), and a BSc in Business from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2003).

Prior to her academic career, she worked as a financial journalist and translator in Madrid for EFE, the leading news agency in Spanish, as well as for Dow Jones Newswires and The Wall Street Journal Europe. She is co-editor of Girasol Press, a micropress dedicated to experimental translation, multilingual poetics, and radical publishing practices.
