Profile

Dr Laurent Perge is lecturer in the mechanical engineering department, coordinating the Group Business Design Project unit. He has strong links with industrial and academic organisations throughout Europe.

Between 2008 and 2011, Laurent developed his PhD thesis Gastroretentive composites solid lipid microparticles for extended-release of drug in Ecole Nationale de Chimie de Montpellier, France.

Following his PhD, Laurent joined a private research organisation in Bordeaux area, France, to develop biobased polymeric medical devices, quickly expanding to different types of industrial sectors such as aerospace and luxury.

After a 2-year career break to travel the world, Laurent joined the University of Limerick, Ireland, to work on process analytical tools in the pharmacy sector, as well as develop building blocks for a spin-out on production of nanoparticles for active pharmaceutical ingredient.

Laurent then joined the University of Bath in 2019, first in the chemical engineering department as visiting researcher and research assistant, followed by joining SETsquared as innovation adviser and circular business lead to support start-ups and SMEs in adopting new business models.

Between 2021 and 2023, Laurent onboarded, followed, and successfully passed his MBA from the School of Management of the University of Bath, his capstone project entitled Green Tech Pioneers: How to organise and fund a university-energised venture builder creating responsible and sustainable start-ups working on today's and tomorrow's global challenges?

Research

Laurent's research is focussed on developing alternative materials using biobased polymers and fibres in different sectors, and to look at alternative business models to allow the sustainable commercialisation of these materials.

The main aims are the development of a biobased, regenerative economy and the interaction of materials with externalities.

His research interests include the fundamental developments of materials with advanced analysis techniques. Laurent oversees experimental research projects as well as business modelling for engineers.
