Personal profile

Research interests

Associated with the Bath Institute for Digital Security and Behaviour, Johnny's research generally contributes to discussions on the responsible innovation of technology, and how emerging technologies impact society and organisations.

He is passionate about the home as well as neighbourhood communities, and in his PhD project critically examines the privacy and security implications surrounding smart home technology adoption, with a focus on how these technologies are used at the neighbourhood level. His doctoral work is funded by the ESRC Discribe Hub + research programme, which investigates the adoption of security technology.

Johnny also holds an MA in Journalism from UWE Bristol and is also interested in work focusing on the public media sector. More recently, he secured £6,000 via the ESRC Digital Good Network, which enabled him to complete a three-month secondment with the BBC R&D investigating the responsible development of Generative Artificial Intelligence in journalistic use cases. In particular his work investigated methods for evaluating the social impact of AI beyond technical metrics. He is currently in the process of writing up his findings in the form of a book chapter due to be published later this year.

Outside of his core research, he is an advocate for Open Research having worked on the University of Bath's Open Research Report 2024, and taught various workshop-style classes on Open Research (pre-prints, pre-registration and open coding). He is also interested in EDI and has been involved in and written on topics related to the inclusion of LGBT people at work.
