Research interests

Associated with the Bath Institute for Digital Security and Behaviour, Johnny’s research generally contributes to the discourse on privacy and security of smart home technologies, advocating for developments that are equitable and respectful of all people’s rights and well-being. His PhD project critically examines the implications and behaviours surrounding smart home technology adoption, with a focus on how these technologies are used at the neighbourhood level. Johnny’s work is part of the wider ESRC-funded Discribe Hub + research programme, which investigates the adoption of security technology.

Outside of his core research, he is an advocate for Open Research having worked on the University of Bath's Open Research Report 2024, and taught various workshop-style classes on Open Research (pre-prints, pre-registration and open coding). He is also interested in EDI and has been involved in and written on topics related to the inclusion of LGBT people at work.
