Research interests

John Brennan is a Visiting Professor and a Variable Hours Teaching Fellow at ICHEM, and also an Emeritus Professor of Higher Education Research at the Open University, where for 20 years he directed the Centre for Higher Education Research and Information (CHERI). CHERI undertook research projects on higher education nationally and internationally, often in partnerships with other institutions. Professor Brennan has authored or co-authored 13 books about higher education, along with very many journal articles and other publications.

In recent years, Professor Brennan has also worked with several universities in the UK, as well as Bath including Oxford, Bristol and the London School of Economics. He has also worked with a UNESCO higher education research centre, and several universities around the world.

Professor Brennan’s background is in sociology and his higher education research has focused on topics such as graduate employment, social equity, regional impacts of universities, quality assurance, flexible learning pathways and lifelong learning.
