Previous roles have included Reader and Senior Lecturer (Bath Spa University), John Adams Research Fellow (IOE, London), Curriculum Leader and Teaching Fellow (University of Bath). I have also been a Partnership Adviser for the Learning and Skills Council, an English language teacher and in-company trainer, and held research and workforce development positions in four local authorities in England and Wales.

I have externally examined EdD and PhD students at various universities in the UK and internationally. I am Associate Editor and former Editor (2022-23)  of the Journal of Vocational Education and Training, and a member of the editorial boards of the British Journal of Educational Studies, the International Journal of Training and Development and the Journal of Education and Work. I was also previously on the editorial board of the Curriculum Journal (2023-6) and the editorial advisory board of the Internationale Berufsbildungforschung Springer book series. I have undertaken evaluations and reviews for the European Commission, the Latvian Council of Science, Irish Research Council, Independent Research Fund (Denmark), ESRC, the Higher Education Academy (UK), and the National Research Foundation (South Africa). I am also a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Plymouth and a Visiting Professor at the University of Derby.
