Previous roles have included Reader and Senior Lecturer (Bath Spa University), John Adams Research Fellow (IOE, London), Curriculum Leader and Teaching Fellow (University of Bath). I have also been a Partnership Adviser for the Learning and Skills Council, an English language teacher and in-company trainer, and held research and workforce development positions in four local authorities in England and Wales.

I have externally examined EdD and PhD students at the universities of Nottingham, Huddersfield, Bath, Lancaster and UCL. I am a member of the editorial board and management committee of the Journal of Vocational Education and Training and the editorial advisory board of the Internationale Berufsbildungforschung Springer book series.
