Previous roles have included Reader and Senior Lecturer (Bath Spa University), John Adams Research Fellow (IOE, London), Curriculum Leader and Teaching Fellow (University of Bath). I have also been a Partnership Adviser for the Learning and Skills Council, an English language teacher and in-company trainer, and held research and workforce development positions in four local authorities in England and Wales.

I have externally examined EdD and PhD students at the universities of Nottingham, Huddersfield, Bath, Lancaster, KCL and UCL. I am a member of the editorial board and management committee of the Journal of Vocational Education and Training, the editorial boards of the International Journal of Training and Development and the Journal of Education and Work, and the editorial advisory board of the Internationale Berufsbildungforschung Springer book series. I have undertaken evaluations and reviews for the European Commission, the Latvian Council of Science, the Higher Education Academy (UK), and the National Research Foundation (South Africa). I am also a Visiting Professor at the University of Derby.
