I am interested in the design and construction of intelligent systems. I believe there is a great opportunity for machine intelligence in digital entertainment, and new technology and media such as virtual reality only open even more possibilities. My current research explores applications of machine learning to interactive digital experiences, and is being carried out in cooperation with Cambridge-based video games studio Ninja Theory. In particular, I am investigating better ways to understand the intention of a user in an immersive virtual reality environment and elaborate believable responses. Due both to current technical limitations and the inherent nature of the medium, this is a fundamentally hard problem, but one that needs to be tackled in order to build more realistic and meaningful experiences.
