Research interests

Dr Irene Macías, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and member of the Chartered Institute for Linguistics, graduated from King’s College, London, where she obtained her degree and her doctorate.

She is currently Director of Studies for the International Management and Modern Languages degree programme. She is also a very active member of the Learning and Teaching community at Bath. She collaborates with the Centre for Learning & Teaching as Advisor and Senior Observer for both the Bath Course and the Bath Scheme. She has also worked extensively with schools, hosting and organizing in-house events such as the annual Language Teachers Event. 

She is a member of the Bath Team working on the EU funded CO-CREATION: The Cohesive City: Addressing Stigmatisation in Disadvantaged Urban Neighbourhoods. As part of this project, she has been working with disadvantaged communities in Mexico City. One of the aims of this project is to develop a new methodological tool, that of ‘Co-Creation’, bringing together researchers, artists and policy-makers to address stigmatisation.

She is the Co-founder and Co-Director of LanGW4, a languages consortium whose aim is to advance scholarship on language learning and teaching. The consortium brings together the universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter. LanGW4 organizes annual Colloquiums on Innovation in Modern Languages Education.

Externally, she served on the national panel set up to review A Level language content, ALCAB. She sat on the editorial board of Vida Hispanica, of the Association for Language Learning until 2016. She regularly reviews articles on language teaching for other journals and writes critical reviews of language books for various publishers. She has worked as external examiner and is a UNILANG certified assessor.

Her research interests are in the field of Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics (Multilingualism), and Pedagogy.
