Research interests

I am passionate about linking HE research with teaching and learning practice to enable social justice outcomes, on  the leadership which accompanies this  and  on the publishing practice  which  enables its active dissemination. Interests:social justice, research  into doctoral learning and  supervision, international postcolonial and decolonial developments in HE , curriculum,widening participation, teaching and  learning, assessment, quality assurance, , pedadogy  in  the  humanities and  arts, writing  for publication.

My HE research and leadership career began as a researcher on the ‘Enquiry in to the role of the external examiner ‘(ESRC/CNAA funded) at CHES, London university and I have successfully gained research funding as PI and Co- I on a number of projects since e.g. doctoral  learning journeys (2007-11) Sir Ron Cooke international fellowship - transferring social justice practice from South Africa to the UK (HEA 2013); projects with the British Council and British Academy  in Iraq (women academics and their development – til 2015) and most recently as a Co-I on a project led by Uni Bristol and Uni Johannesburg-   SARiHE (https://sarihe.org.za ) on supporting and enabling the  successful transition into and through university for rural students, which used a co-researcher model and creative research processes with 72 SA co researcher undergraduates in three universities. One of my main contributions beyond  data  gathering  , presenting, writing, was to facilitate and enable the production of a booklet written by student co-researchers ‘Going to University’ pub in 11 African languages.

 

Teaching interests

I supervise doctoral students on the  DBA.

I teach  through a mix of interactive dialogue and provision of  pre reading, lectures, information to  encourage critical, creative engagement.

As as practising  teacher and  educational  developer  in the  UK and internationally, I am interested in research informed and underpinned teaching, students  as partners and  learner  diversity. I teach about  HE  pedagoogy, doctoral learning  and supervision, writing  for the  doctorate  and  for  publication, and about  literature  (contemporary, postcolonial, Gothic,women's writing, creative writing.)

I am available  to  supervise students in  any  area related  to my research  and teaching experience: HE pedagogy, assessment,  curriculum, social  justice, decolonising the  curriculum, international HE  developments, quality  assurance, gender, doctoral learning, supervision, writing for  publication, humantiies and  arts  in  HE. ..
