Research interests

We are interested in the preparation, characterization and application of polymers with controlled structure and properties. We have been particularly interested in polymers with inorganic elements such as silicon in their backbones and also in combining our polymers with nanoparticles and other nanostructured solids. We use controlled radical polymerization techniques to produce well defined polymers.


Much of our synthetic work has applied sonochemistry - or the use of high intensity ultrasound. This exploits the effect of cavitation and produces radicals and excited state species, enhances of mass transfer and catalysis at solid surfaces and gives excellent mixing in multiphase systems such as emulsions. It can promote and accelerate a range of chemical reactions and processes.  Of particular interest to polymer chemists, sonication can cause polymer chain breakage and reduction of molecular weight in a controlled manner, offering the chance to produce polymers with low polydispersity and also functionalised, graft and block materials.


As well as polymers, we are also interested in the study of fundamental mechanisms of sonochemical reactions. Aqueous systems are of particular interest and this has led to projects as diverse as the degradation of environmental pollutants to a joint project with medical physicists to determine the power thresholds and other safety considerations in medical ultrasound systems and working with dentists to understand the working of ultrasonic instruments and to improve their design and effectiveness in cleaning teeth.
