Personal profile

Research interests

I am a Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Medicine at the University of Bath. Before joining UoB, I worked in elite football for more than seven years, holding Sport Scientist roles with several professional clubs, including FC Inter Milan, Arsenal FC, and most recently Olympique de Marseille, where I served as Lead Sport Scientist.
During my career, I contributed to winning one English FA Cup and reaching three additional finals in Italian and French leagues.

My research focuses on helping sport practitioners make better decisions by generating reliable knowledge and translating it into everyday practice. I currently focus on injury epidemiology and mechanisms, monitoring fatigue, training load, and developing post-exercise recovery strategies to support athlete health and performance.

I also have a strong interest in women’s sport and aim to contribute to the growing evidence base that reflects the specific needs of female athletes. In addition, I explore how sport technologies and the data they generate are evaluated and used in practice. This includes protecting athletes’ data rights and ensuring teams do not become over-reliant on technology. My aim is to promote responsible, evidence-informed, and practical use of technology in sport.

My work has informed policies and decision-making at the highest levels of sport. For example, my research on injury mechanisms has been included in the football-specific guidelines for recording and reporting epidemiological data on injury and illness. It has also been incorporated into the Medical extension of the FIFA Football Language, which is currently used in FIFA tournaments to collect medical data.
Additionally, I have contributed to numerous applied projects with professional sports organisations supporting decision-making about fatigue monitoring, recovery strategies, and the organisation of performance departments in professional football.
