Accepting Doctoral Students

Personal profile

Research interests

I am Professor of Innovation Economics and Sustainability at the University of Bath. Prior to joining Bath, I held professorial and faculty positions at Leeds University Business School and Nottingham University Business School. I have extensive experience in leading interdisciplinary research, securing external funding, and developing high-performing academic teams. My research examines how firms, cities, and institutions drive eco-innovation and productivity during sustainability transitions, with a focus on ESG, circular economy, green innovation, and policy impacts across advanced and emerging economies. I work closely with policymakers and industry partners, and welcome collaborations in innovation economics, sustainable business, and applied impact research.

Research themes

Eco-innovation and firm performance:
Institutional drivers of innovation, ESG, productivity, and competitiveness.

Sustainability standards and policy impacts:
Firm-level effects of ISO14001, Emissions Trading Systems, and environmental regulation.

Cities, clusters, and local knowledge spillovers:
How place-based innovation ecosystems influence green transitions.

Circular economy and sustainable supply chains:
Evidence-based pathways for circular business models, their synergies and trade-offs with net zero, and green public procurement.

Emerging economies and comparative transitions:

Why innovation, sustainability, and productivity follow different trajectories in emerging versus advanced economies.

My work has been published in leading journals such as Research Policy, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Studies, Journal of Economics Geography, Ecological Economics, Journal of Business Ethics, World Development, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Business History, Journal of Product Innovation Management, and British Journal of Management, among others.

My research has attracted funding from ESRC, BBSRC, the European Commission (H2020), and NERC, supporting projects on low-carbon innovation, sustainability transitions, circular economy, and net-zero digital transformation across Europe, Africa, and the UK.

I welcome PhD applications in innovation economics, sustainable business, ESG, and circular economy. My supervision style is structured and supportive. I support students in developing publishable research with strong international and policy relevance.
