Accepting Doctoral Students
Dimitrios Gounopoulos is a Professor of Accounting and Finance at the University of Bath (previously Head of Department - Research). He is as well the External Examiner for the University of Warwick, the University of Manchester and the University of York (previously at Imperial College London, University of Leeds, the University of Nottingham, and the University of Sheffield among others). He is an occasional columnist in Columbia University, School of Law prestigious CLS Blue Sky Blog on issues relating to regulations intervention as well as a Visiting Research Scholar. Further, he serves as a Senior Visiting Research Fellow in the School of Business Management and Economics of the University of Sussex and Visiting fellow in Newcastle University Business School of Newcastle University.
Prior to joining the School of Management, University of Bath Dimitrios held a Professorial Position at Newcastle University Business School, Newcastle University. Previously he worked for the University of Sussex (School of Business, Management, and Economics), the University of Surrey (Surrey Business School), and the University of Manchester (Manchester Business School). He also worked on several private companies and government consulting projects related with electronics and telecommunications. Professor Gounopoulos obtained degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Leeds and the University of Bradford. In addition he holds an MBA from Leeds University Business School - the University of Leeds and a PhD from Manchester Business School - University of Manchester. Finally, he holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice from the University of Surrey.
His main Research Interest lies in the areas of International Accounting, Corporate Finance. He specializes in Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and he is known for his continuous research involved in this field. His research also addresses issues on Climate Change, Corporate Innovation, Corporate Governance, Executive Compensation, and Earnings Management. Professor Gounopoulos work has attracted the interest of the markets and as a result of this he was honored with a Gong Ceremony by the Oldest Stock Exchange in the world, the NYSE – Euronext Amsterdam. Further to this distinction, he was invited to deliver a speech on Amsterdam Stock Exchange on the ‘Global development of IPOs Research’. His presentation was well attended by market makers and bankers and attracted the interest of the media as he was interviewed by the main Dutch Television Network, RTL.
He has published extensively in highly ranked International Journals in Accounting and Finance including the Journal of Corporate Finance (7 papers), Financial Management (2 papers), Journal of Banking and Finance (4 papers), European Financial Management (4 papers), Journal of Business Finance and Accounting (2 papers) as well as in other disciplines including Journal of Management Studies, Economic History Review etc. His research has been presented at various highly rated US and European conferences including the prestigious Western Finance Association, American Accounting Association and Financial Mangement (U.S.) and cited by leading academic journals including the Journal of Financial Economics and Review of Financial Studies. A special moment has been the best pitch in corporate finance award at the 2021 European Financial Management Conference. He has been invited to research seminars by several institutions in the UK, Europe and Australia. His recognition among the academic society appears from the fact that he has been invited 71 times as External Examiner for Doctoral Theses by twenty-six leading Institutions (overall he has examined 85 Doctoral Thesis). He serves as an ad-hoc referee in several academic journals including the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Review of Accounting Studies the Journal of Corporate Finance, as an Associate Editor in Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies and at the Editorial Board of the Corporate Governance: An International Review.
In collaboration with a colleague; he received a generous Research Grant on Energy Economics by the Dutch Government. He also participated in a consortium under 'Surrey Space Center' on a big project of the European Space Agency concerning the 'Procurement and Development of an Active Debris Removal Mission'. The project was successfully launched from Cape Canaveral Space Center in Florida, U.S. Further, he received a generous grant to research the first IPO ever listed in the world (maritime company VOC was listed in 1602). This involvement intrigued him to explore IPOs from various historical perspectives by expanding in other stock markets. This experience is valuable on his role as an independent Initial Public Offerings advisor. Professor Gounopoulos is a visiting academic in several Business Schools teaching in MBA and MSc programs. He is an independent Initial Public Offerings Consultant and is strongly linked with markets including London and Amsterdam Stock Exchanges.
