Research interests

Dr Carl Scarth is a Research Associate working in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath.

His work focusses upon data-driven methods for design and analysis of composite aircraft structures accounting for uncertainties, manufacturing defects, and process features. His research interests include: uncertainty quantification, data science and machine learning, composite design and manufacture, Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation, and aeroelasticity and structural dynamics.

Carl graduated from the University of Bristol in 2010 with a MEng in Engineering Design with study in industry, specialising in structural mechanics and nonlinear dynamics.

He achieved a PhD in 2017 as part of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Advanced Composites for Innovation and Science (ACCIS CDT), partly sponsored by Embraer. His thesis outlined new methodologies for optimisation of composite aircraft wings to ensure that their aeroelastic stability is both robust and reliable to uncertainties in material properties arising from fibre misalignment.

Between 2016 and 2018 Carl worked as a Research Assistant at Swansea University, where he investigated methods for defining spatially-varying uncertainty in industrial Finite Element models, also in collaboration with Embraer.

Carl moved to the University of Bath in 2020, initially working as part of the EPSRC ADAPT project, focusing upon design and optimisation tools for reducing manufacturing defects during high-rate manufacture of composite aerospace structures. He is currently working under the EPSRC CerTest programme grant, researching Bayesian methods for the fusion of experimental and numerical datasets, while inferring measures of the uncertainties associated with each dataset.
