Personal profile
Research interests
I joined CNEM as a research fellow in March 2026 to pursue my longstanding interest in how our metabolism reacts to what we eat, and how this varies so much from person to person. My journey into nutrition research began during my PhD at the University of Aberdeen with Prof. John Speakman, where I explored how calorie restriction influences lifespan and metabolism. As a postdoc at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the supervision of Dr. Dudley Lamming, I shifted my focus to the macronutrient composition of our diet, particularly dietary protein, examining how sex, age, and genetic background shape how we respond to both the amount of protein we eat and its amino acid breakdown.
Going forward, I hope to dig deeper into how variability in genetic background influences the response to differing levels of protein in the diet, with the aim of uncovering genes not previously known to play a role in protein metabolism. One of the things that drew me to Bath was its strong track record in human research, and I'm excited to bring my expertise in nutrition and large dataset analysis to work that's more directly translatable to people's lives. I'm also keen to get involved in scientific outreach, because if we want to make a "food as medicine" approach to health a reality, it will be crucial to have input from a vast array of people.
When I am not in the lab I like to make wonky creations on the pottery wheel, or take my bike or skis on a holiday somewhere beautiful.
