Personal profile

Research interests

Belal Ahmad is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath and an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London. His research focuses on enabling dexterity at the microscale through the development of microrobotic systems with advanced actuation, control, and sensing. His main research interests include microrobotics, biomedical devices, micromanipulation, high-speed sensing and actuation, and closed-loop control, with applications in biomedical engineering and minimally invasive medicine.

His research spans dexterous microrobots at the tip of optical fibres, optothermal and magnetic microrobots for micromanipulation and single-cell handling, motion tracking and control of multi-degree-of-freedom nanopositioning systems, and high-speed robotic platforms for small-scale living organisms observation and stimulation.

Belal received his MSc and PhD in Engineering from Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan, in 2015 and 2019, respectively. Before joining the University of Bath, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the FEMTO-ST Institute in France and an Imperial College Research Fellow at Imperial College London.
