Research interests
My research focuses on the Physics of low-dimensional and nonlinear systems.
My group investigates two-dimensional electron physics in inhomogeneous magnetic fields and has demonstrated commensurability oscillations in magnetic superlattices, resistance resonance effects, magnetic edge states, electrically induced spin resonance, spin resonance fluoresence, and the crossover between electric and magnetic edges in quantum Hall systems. We also use two dimensional electron gases as photodetectors of spin excitations in individual nanomagnets.
My other main research interest is driven by the understanding of physical processes which control the emergence of synchronization in local neural networks and the mechanisms of information coding. To this end my group has developed nonlinear optimization tools which we use to infer the microscopic properties of ion channels from the analysis of macroscopic neuronal activity accessible to measurement. This approach provides a quantitative method for conditioning small silicon networks which adapt to physiologial feedback in real time. These devices are proving extremely useful to restore the rhythmic activity lost to disease and to give unique therapies for chronic and often fatal disease.
Willing to supervise doctoral students
Applications for PhD projects in molecular electronics, quantum devices, neuromorphics and computational neuroscience are welcome.
