Organisation profile
We carry out basic and applied research at the frontiers of engineering and science. Our work includes strong interdisciplinary connections to basic science and mathematics. Our research is funded by UK research councils, the EU and industry.
Research centres
- Centre for Bioengineering & Biomedical Technologies
- Centre for Climate Adaptation & Environment Research (CAER)
- Centre for Integrated Materials, Processes & Structures (IMPS)
- Centre for Regenerative Design & Engineering for a Net-Positive World (RENEW)
- Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems (SES)
- IAAPS research
- The Foundry: Centre for Digital, Manufacturing & Design
Research environment
Our academic staff, research fellows, post-doctoral researchers and postgraduate students carry out internationally significant work and publish in a number of journals.
Because our teaching is research-led, undergraduates learn about the latest findings. Many of them also have the chance to work with our research centres.
Research impact
91% of our research activity was graded as either world-leading or internationally excellent in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. We carry out research that finds solutions to real-world problems.Read more about our research impact »
