This talk provided an overview of my main research focus: the implications of teaching and learning in English as a second/third or fourth language in higher education. Specifically, the question of loss of quality and the effect on student learning outcomes.

English-medium instruction offers advantages for students and researchers with regard to competency acquisition, credit transfer and international research. Students can gain practical experience in using English as a technical language and prepare themselves for an international labour and research market. For many international students, the language barriers which they would otherwise face in German-taught courses are also reduced. Furthermore, exchange students are dependent on English-taught courses to receive full credits from German universities. Researchers also benefit from English-taught courses because it allows them to integrate their research directly into their teaching, without any additional language barriers. The development and expansion of the English-taught courses and study programmes thus also ensures the attractiveness of the TU Braunschweig as a place to study and as an international partner university. The project International Teaching supports the disciplines in their strategic development, didactic planning and implementation of existing and new courses, modules and study programmes in English.
