TELSIG Podcast - How Gen AI is disrupting academic publishing

Invited interview for The TELSIG Podcast, produced by the BALEAP Technology Enhanced Learning Special Interest Group (TELSIG), discussing how generative artificial intelligence is disrupting academic writing and publishing.

Drawing on empirical research with applied linguistics journal editors, the discussion examined the growth in journal submissions following the widespread adoption of generative AI, increasing pressures on editors and peer reviewers, the use of AI in peer review, and concerns surrounding the rigour and integrity of academic publishing processes.

The interview also explored publication pressure, questionable research practices, the replication crisis, access to research data, possible reforms to academic publishing, and the responsibilities of researchers, editors and publishers in an increasingly AI-mediated scholarly environment. It concluded with practical advice for teacher-researchers seeking to publish their research and discussion of future research directions.
