Description

Paper presented "Theorizing as problem-solving: The Logic of Pursuit in the Growth of Knowledge": The growth of knowledge in strategic management hinges on the development of generative research programs. However, the path from the discovery to justification of research programs is fraught with decision hazards that can lead researchers astray unnecessarily consuming costly resources. This paper introduces the logic of pursuit to aid researchers navigate these hazards and ascertain whether they should continue working on a particular problem. Specifically, this paper provides a five-stage trial-and-error approach – Theorizing as Problem-finding and Problem-solving (TPP) – that encourages researchers’ curiosity and creativity by focusing on doubt generated by anomalies and lack of understanding of complex phenomena. TPP then prompts researchers to transform doubt into well-structured problems and to develop research programs to resolve them. Along this journey, various indicators including economy of research and consilience guide researchers on whether to pursue their research program. Research programs that effectively address the problem they were devised for are seen as being highly warranted and tend to flourish. We provide guidelines for reviewers and editors to enable the development of a pipeline of such novel research programs for the field.
