Paper presentation: Slavery Legacies in the city of Bath: Engaging with Silenced Memories through Creative Approaches
). It focuses on some recent attempts to engage with the memories of the transatlantic slavery in the cities of Bath and Bristol. Presented by the editors of the recently published collective volume ‘Breaking the Dead Silence: Engaging with the Legacies of Empire and Slave-Ownership in Bath and Bristol’s Memoryscapes’ (Liverpool University Press, June 2024), the paper reflects on a range of factors that tend to hinder an honest approach to the legacies of transatlantic slavery, in particular in UNESCO World Heritage cities like Bath. These include highlight heritage injustices, persistent racial and social hierarchies and the and vested interest of powerful institutions in official narratives celebrating colonialism as a source of Britain’s prosperity, technical innovation, and entrepreneurialism.
