Description
The modern university today is among those institutions that cultivate the teaching of disciplines - drawn from the human sciences - which need to be interrogated for the continuing colonization of thought, including their epistemological goals and methods. The divisions into the humanities, social sciences, natural or physical and life sciences, and other professional programmes, runs the risk of decadence and challenged legitimacy unless questions pertaining to the subjects’ contemporary relevance are answered urgently. The prospect of a collapse of reason, meaning and creativity in the acquisition and production of knowledge (teaching, scholarship and research) as well as the transmission of skills, leads one to re-visit the purpose of higher education as humanistic and the role of the institution as a humanizing one, especially in the face of ever-evolving technologies and growing market-forces over and above the pedagogical imperatives of intellectual growth. This conference therefore aims to critically examine the role of modern universities in maintaining relevant and humanistic educational practices amidst the challenges of disciplinary fragmentation, technological evolution, and market forces.| Period | 16 Feb 2024 → 17 Feb 2024 |
