How to understand famine: stories from the everyday realities of famine

This was a talk for students and staff at the University of Bath.

In August 2025, famine was ‘irrefutably confirmed’ in Gaza, and the year before famine was declared in Sudan. Famine could have ended as the world can feed itself, but instead political and economic decisions are allowing famine to continue, not only taking human life and dignity, but also challenging our core values and nature as humanity.

This special lecture will introduce current themes and debates in famine studies and hear first-hand stories from the realities of famine in Sudan. Even though Bath feels a world away from contexts of famine, this is a chance to understand what is happening and how connected we are.
