The digital public engagement was part of the Festival of Social Science 2025, an exciting opportunity to showcase our leading social science research.

In this session, I shared my research, which investigates how students’ willingness to communicate (WTC) is assessed in the classroom, often through class participation. This is a crucial area of study because teachers and students may perceive WTC and class participation very differently.

The discussion invited participants to share their learning experiences at school or university and to reflect on whether, and how, students’ participation should be assessed.
