English Medium Instruction (EMI) in Higher Education: Maximising Student Success

Chair and moderator of the BALEAP English Medium Instruction Special Interest Group (EMI SIG) Global Webinar Series 4, English Medium Instruction (EMI) in Higher Education: Maximising Student Success.

The international webinar brought together Professor Ernesto Macaro, Dr Mark Searle and Professor Heath Rose from the University of Oxford to examine key challenges and opportunities affecting students studying through English Medium Instruction.

The session explored how language-learning strategies developed within second-language education can be adapted to support EMI students, how students can take a more active role in their academic learning, and how English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) specialists can contribute to EMI student success. It also considered transitions from secondary education to EMI higher education, academic learning outcomes and priorities for future EMI research.

Samantha Curle moderated the webinar and facilitated discussion between the invited speakers and the international audience.
