AI’s Chris Rock problem: What it means for students and universities

Description

Riffing about gun-violence, stand up comedian Chris Rock once joked “I think all bullets should cost $5,000 [...] You know why? Cause if a bullet cost $5,000 there would be no more innocent bystanders…People would think before they killed somebody." Could AI (LLM's like Chat GPT) have made this joke? In this essay, we argue no and explain why. We christen AI's inability to show us the world in a new way, AI's Chris Rock problem. We discuss its implications, noting that the iron cage of bureaucracy with administrators dictating how the classroom should be structured will simply lead to the mass production of students whose skills are replaceable by another algorithmically trained “agent.”
