Advancing English-medium instruction research: quantitative methods and insights

Invited webinar delivered as part of the 2024–25 English-Medium Instruction (EMI) Webinar Series organised by the Arqus European University Alliance and Maynooth University.

Drawing on the book Researching English Medium Instruction: Quantitative Methods for Students and Researchers, the webinar introduced key concepts and quantitative approaches for researching English-Medium Instruction in higher education. It examined how methodologies including ANOVA, Likert-type surveys, and structural equation modelling can be applied to investigate EMI practices, challenges, and outcomes.

The session considered empirical examples of quantitative EMI research and examined factors associated with success in EMI, including content-learning outcomes, English-language proficiency, and psychological constructs influencing student performance. It aimed to develop participants' capacity to plan, conduct, interpret, and apply quantitative EMI research and to consider how quantitative evidence can inform EMI policy and educational practice.
